Sherman Alexie Biography

Sherman Alexie

Sherman Alexie is a Native American that has written many books about Native Americans, I think his most successful one was Smoke Signals that was made into a movie.  He lived most of his childhood in a Native American reservation near Spokane, Washington until he transferred to an all-white school because he was bullied by his peers for enjoying education.  Alexie originally wanted to become a medical doctor but reconsidered that career option because he fainted too much during human anatomy class.  Alexie competed in the World Poetry Bout Association in 1998 and won the World Heavyweight division. He became the first poet to successfully hold the title for four years in a row.  Alexie occasionally performs stand-up comedy and was the featured performer at the Vancouver International Comedy Festival in 1999.
